In New York, you don't have to choose between playing it safe—by submitting an absentee ballot—and going to the polls. 

It is legal to DO BOTH however you will not be allowed to cast a machine vote on election day.  If you have requested an absentee ballot, you will be limited to casting a provisional, paper ballot if you choose to vote on election day.  See details HERE

After the application is processed a ballot will be mailed to the address you provided. Mail in ballots must be postmarked by the indicated deadline for the primary or the general election, or dropped off in person at the County Board of Elections one day before election day.  Absentee ballots may also be dropped at your polling place on election day.
