Town of Clinton Democratic Committee Monthly Meeting Notes

DECEMBER 17, 2018

  • Whitton and others are arguing that Clinton pursue a “Choice Aggregation” effort to help Clinton community reduce energy rates by tapping into local green energy suppliers while still using Central Hudson for delivery.

  • Town of Clinton Board close to introducing a law to allow for solar farms.

  • Whitton updating CAC and public on “Climate Smart Communities” on 2nd Wednesday of January at 4pm

  • Recent recycling rule changes at Clinton transfer station restrict recycling options. Some discussion of consequent increase in chargeable garbage.  Welsh, Waste Mgmt and Recycle Depot mentioned as local garbage companies. Possibility of buying composting bins to help offset this cost and improve ecological impact will be explored.  Write to Town Board Member Dean Michael with comments.

  • We need to run strong candidates for 7 local elections in 2019, including 2 Town Board members (Werner and Michael terms expire), Town Justice, Town Supervisor, Town Clerk, Tax Collector and Highway Superintendent. Candidates may be fielded from Dem Committee, Town Board subcommittees, or elsewhere. In particular we are looking for candidates for: Town Board and Town Justice.

  • Additionally, we need representation and assistance on library committee, CAC, Zoning Board, and others.  A great opportunity to start to get involved and make our community a stronger and better place to live.

Questions were raised re statistics on mid-term elections which could be shared with voters / website. One point offered was that 66% of Town of Clinton’s registered voters turned out in November and that CD 19 canvassers knocked on more doors than any district in the country. Others stats are still being calculated, per Judy Canham, whose husband  Charlie may help consolidate.

Some debate about whether there is a description of Dem Committee membership requirements. Apparently, not.

Committee supported Canham’s suggestion to work with nearby Dem Committees to schedule speakers to address issues of local interest.
